By linking skills training to the needs of the labour market, OneWorld Workforce Solutions works to ensure that Canada’s Aboriginal people can fully participate in economic opportunities, and that means meaningful employment.

Canada is experiencing skills shortages and employers are looking for workers with the skills and experience to fill jobs.  Skilled trades offer diverse opportunities and require you to work with your hands and your mind.  Plus, the skilled trades are among the best paid careers out there and poised to be more lucrative because of increased demand for skilled labour.  According to Statistics Canada, the hourly rate for people in skilled trades is 6% higher than other occupations.

Skilled trades have a number of options available to you. Narrow down your choices to two or three manageable choices.

Find out about opportunities to observe a trade or to participate in a pre-apprenticeship program to obtain practical, on-the-job training.  And talk to people who work in the trade that you want to learn more about. You might just like what you see and hear.

  6. Develop an elevator pitch – a 30 second or one minute summary about you and your job goals.
  7. Social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter can help you get the word out that you’re looking for a job.  Some companies are using social media for recruiting.
  8. Interviews: Be on time and even arrive early to ensure you are relaxed and ready.  Prepare questions to ask the employer. Dress professionally and give a good first impression.
  9. Follow-up with the interviewer or with a company that you would like to work with.  Be persistent, not a pest.  Send a thank-you note, brief stating why you are the one for the job.
  10. Remember to be yourself and show your passion and enthusiasm.
